CARLING WEEKEND: READING AND LEEDS FESTIVALS
Yes, we all remember the Daphne and Celeste incident with fond tears in our eyes, but sadly this year’s bill appears to be missing its traditional clanger. 2006’s line-up boasts some of the loudest acts around: headlining this year are Muse (back with new material) and veteran grungers Pearl Jam, while the stages also boasts appearances from Slayer, My Chemical Romance, Bullet For My Valentine, Less Than Jake, Fall Out Boy, Taking Back Sunday and Panic! At The Disco. Among the numerous indie bands playing, be sure to check out the ever-amazing Aiden, Charlie Simpson's awesome Fightstar and some genuinely hairy-arsed rock from Wolfmother and Mastodon. Remember children: be tolerant - we don't want a repeat of the 50 Cent deckchair…
ACTS YOU MUST SEE: Pearl Jam, Slayer, My Chemical Romance, The Dresden Dolls, Killswitch Engage, Sick Of It All, Capdown
BULLDOG BASH
The prospect of "Europe's Number 1 Biker Party" may sound a bit scary, but the Bulldog Bash, held at Shakespeare County Raceway in Warwickshire between August 10 and 13 has become a magnet for many of the world's top metal acts. This year, it plays host to Pitchshifter, Hundred Reasons, The Almighty, Breed 77 and more, plus there are other attractions like drag racing, a custom bike show and a, er, topless bike wash... Plus, there's an unsigned bands tent, DJs, Wall of Death, a fun fair and more: just remember to bring your bike or you’ll look a bit silly.
ACTS YOU MUST SEE: Pitchshifter, The Almighty, Engerica, The Answer, Breed 77
HURRICANE
Based in Scheeßel near Bremen, Germany, the Hurricane Festival was first held in 1973 and is one of the prime European alterantive events of the summer. This year, Muse get to headline the Sunday and are joined by Pretty Girls Make Graves, Wolfmother, Death Cab For Cutie, The Strokes, The Hives and more over the weekend of June 23 - 25. There are also enough indie acts to keep you happy, including Maximo Park, Hard-Fi, The Raconteurs and The Cooper Temple Clause. Expect plenty of European goth types supping cider...
ACTS YOU MUST SEE: Backyard Babies, Lagwagon, Gogol Bordello, Mad Caddies, Pretty Girls Make Graves
TRUCK FESTIVAL
What started out as some bands playing while balanced somewhat precariously on the back of two trucks has evolved into a sprawling beast with proper stages and everything. Over 110 bands are playing this year including 65daysofstatic, That F***ing Tank, Skindred and Belarus, but the one band we insist point blank on you seeing is The Rhonda Valley Pigeon Federation. The name alone inspires legendary levels of awe.
ACTS YOU MUST SEE: 65daysofstatic, Skindred, Buck 65, Jetplane Landing
