After emerging from New York’s punk underground scene in the early Eighties, American hip hop group Beastie Boys released their first full-length album Licensed to Ill in 1986. With a shift in genre, tailoring their original hardcore punk music to become pioneers of raw hip hop Licensed to Ill went on to become the first rap album to ever reach Number One. Selling 720,000 copies in six weeks it launched the Brooklyn based trio into the public eye as the first white rap group of any importance.

The sound of Beastie Boys then gradually began maturing, as they developed their take on hip hop to incorporate spaced-out funk, psychedelia and lounge music with an adolescent charm that has given them such a strong following more than 20 years later.

As of 2010 Beastie Boys have sold 22 million albums in the United States alone, and 40 million albums worldwide. They have had four albums reach the top of the Billboard album charts, and Rolling Stone have awarded them positions in their ‘500 Greatest Songs of All Time’ list in 2004, and ‘100 Greatest Artists of All Time’ list in 2005.

Due to Adam Yauch’s announcement that he had cancer in 2008, the album Hot Sauce Committee, Pt. 1 remained unreleased. However following successful treatment, the Beasties are on plan to release Hot Sauce Committee, Pt. 2 in 2011, including virtually all the material intended for the first volume. Definitely one to watch out for!
