Hercules and Love Affair was started by DJ Andy Butler who began his journey into music DJing in a bar in Denver at the age of 15. After moving to Brooklyn, New York he decided to begin his musical project Hercules and Love Affair, playing around with the genres of disco, dance-punk and nu-disco.

In 2004, with the recruitment of other members Kim Ann Foxman and various guest vocalists including Antony Hegarty (lead vocalist in Antony & The Johnsons), and Nomi Ruiz. Hercules and Love Affair were up and running and already causing a scene in the music industry, however the band didn’t make their performance debut until 2008 at the Studio B venue in Brooklyn.

Hercules and Love Affair were signed to DFA records, and released their debut self titled album Hercules and Love Affair in 2008. The album has been critically well received and charted in the top 40 in many countries, giving the band the success and recognition they deserve.

Their 2008 European and North American tour was incredibly successful, and the band often features guest vocalists on its singles, keeping up with the versatility and playful experimentation suggested by the music created.

Antony Hegarty has occasionally collaborated with Hercules and Love Affair, most notably on the single ‘Blind’ released in March 2008. This single was a massive hit and was awarded ‘Best Song’ by Pitchfork Media in the same year.
