After a chance meeting with OutKast’s Big Boi, who then recommended her to Sean ‘P Diddy’ Combs, Janelle Monae was snapped up onto their record label ‘Bad Boy’ in 2006.

Her impact on her fans has also gained attention from media professionals. In 2009 she was nominated for a Grammy in ‘Best Urban/Alternative Performance’, then the following year saw her take home the ‘Centric Award’ at the Soul Train Awards and the ‘Vanguard Award’ at the ASCAP Awards, as well as a nomination for ‘Best Choreography’ at the MTV Video Music Awards.

Her pending nominations for the 2011 Grammy Awards could also see her take home ‘Best Contemporary R&B Album’ and ‘Best Urban/Alternative Performance’.
