Starting in September 2004, The X Factor has quickly become one of the nation’s favourite TV shows. Seven series in, it keeps gathering more and more popularity and momentum with its latest winner Matt Cardle selling 439,000 copies of his debut single in its first week, to quickly become Christmas number one in 2010. The show has launched a range of new celebrities such as Alexandra Burke, Diana Vickers, JLS and Leona Lewis with most of the successful contestants being signed to Simon Cowell’s record label SyCo.

Not without its controversy, The X Factor has witnessed feuding between judges Sharon Osbourne and Dannii Minogue, Malaria taking Cheryl Cole out of the judging panel for a number of weeks, contestants Ablisa hitting each other in the face and allegations of auto-tuning the auditions for the TV viewers.

However this just adds fuel to the interest surrounding the programme, with series 7 raking in 19.4 million viewers - with over 15 million of these voting in the final.

The X Factor has also won numerous awards over the past seven years, with its most recent accolade being the 2011 National Television Awards gong for Best Talent Show, beating competition from the likes of Strictly Come Dancing, Britain’s Got Talent and Dancing On Ice.
