Underworld is a British electro duo, based around members Karl Hyde and Rick Smith. They began performing together in 1980 although under various different band names, before gathering Baz Allen, Bryn Burrows and Alfie Thomas to form Underworld in 1987. This line up became known as Underworld Mk 1 as shortly after the release of debut album Underneath the Radar in 1988, Bryn Burrows left, then following the release of Change the Weather in 1989 Hyde and Smith were once again back to being a duo.

Darren Emerson was then recruited to form Underworld Mk2, where they focused on dance/techno and released Dubnobasswithmyheadman in 1994. This was much more commercially successful, and launched Underworld into the mainstream music scene. As well as this two of their tracks were used for the popular 1996 film Trainspotting, including Born Slippy NUXX. This has since sold over a million copies, and has been frequently remixed and featured in compilations and mashups.

Their 1999 tour ‘Everything, Everything’ was a huge success, and very well received by fans – following on from this Underworld was back to two members, with Smith and Hyde going on to write musical scores for some more of Danny Boyle’s productions including 2007 movie Sunshine and his production of Frankenstein at the Royal National Theatre.

They have recently announced a performance on 27th August on Clapham Common as headliners of the huge South West Four
